iPad Pro 2020 vs. Laptop
The iPad Pro 2020 stands as the latest iPad that closely resembles a laptop when you fit the newest keyboard – the Apple magic keyboard.
Besides, the processor is an upgrade, and its storage capacity and RAM are as huge as some laptops.
Does this qualify it to be a laptop replacement?
2020 iPad Pro was created as an iPad, not a laptop. It is the best iPad you can find in the market today. The additional features that make it look like a laptop are only to enhance its performance as a tablet.
But that isn’t the case with some people. They find the tablet to be a laptop.
Let’s look at the details.
iPad Pro 2020: Reason It Can Be a Laptop Replacement
The iPad Pro is a powerhouse of a machine that enables you to do multiple tasks at a go. You can prepare in-depth reports, make drawings, and also, you can use it for video production.
The Keyboard – Apple Magic Keyboard
The new Magic Keyboard is available for both 11- inch and 12.9-inch models. This is the part that makes the iPad Pro, a worthy laptop replacement.
It’s an amazing companion offering one of the best typing experiences. Its trackpad provides new ways to work with iPadOS. You will love the floating cantilever design that slows you to adjust the angles.
It is a full-size keyboard with backlit, clicky keys. The touch is nice. But what’s is impressive is the scissor mechanism with 1 mm travel, which offers a quiet, responsive typing. Additionally, the keys are big enough to miss them, though, there spacing is too close. People with large fingers might have a little trouble.
The trackpad on this keyboard is pretty narrow. But getting across the screen is still easy, considering it is clickable across its entire surface. Besides, it has a tap to click function.
The typical design of the apple magic keyboard is for multi‑touch gestures. Therefore, you navigate iPadOS with most of the gestures.
It features an adjustable hinge that offers only two possible viewing angles. Though it feels sturdy, the hinge doesn’t tilt back so much, making it difficult for people who draw.
The additional USB-C port for charging your iPad, but it won’t work for anything else like data transfer.
iPad Pro 2020 Falls Behind a Laptop for the Below Reasons
Browsing Experience – Lacklustre
The browsing experience depends on the types of browsers. However, whichever browser you use on this iPad, the experience is lackluster.
Google Chrome, for instance, appears like a merely stretched phone app. There is a significant limitation in the amount of data it displays. Compare this to a laptop: you get multiple images and a massive amount of data at once.
Additionally, Chrome on iPad pro lacks bookmark tools. Bookmarks are essential tools in saving you time while working. Look, Chrome syncs multiple devices for a seamless experience, which allows bookmarks to be available on several devices.
Another limitation occurs when handling Google doc files and PDF files. You can edit a Google doc file on Chrome unless you use the Google doc app. Similarly, you can’t open a PDF file without using an app.
So the browsing on the 2020 iPad Pro fits only a single task at a go.
The new iPad Pro only has one USB-C port and doesn’t support Thunderbolt 3. While the addition of the Magic Keyboard’s USB-C port is a nice thing, it still doesn’t match most of the laptops in the market. The USB-C on the keyboard is only a pass-through for charging.
You increase ports by buying USB hubs, but that is an additional cost.
Small Storage Capacity Compared to Other Laptops
The storage capacity on the iPad Pro is only 128G.
For today’s standard, that is way too low. The majority of laptops begin at 256GB.
The principal target of Apple is cloud storage.
The power cable of the iPad Pro is just 1 meter long. Does this match up to a laptop’s power cable?
It doesn’t. Such a size of a power cable limits you a lot. It means you have to sit close to the socket all the time to juice your laptop replacement.
Undoubtedly, the battery life of iPad pro is long (about 10 hours) than that of a laptop. But that should not sacrifice the length of the cable. If you want a longer USB-C power cable, then you have to buy it.
An Expensive Replacement
The iPad Pro 12.9-inch costs $999. That is just the iPad. Convert it into a laptop:
- Apple magic keyboard – $350 or choose Smart Keyboard Folio (lacks trackpad) – $199
- USB-C cable – $19
- Apple Pencil – $99.00
You may assume any other accessory but not the keyboard, which means you either spend $1349 or $1199.
There are better laptops that cost lower than this in the market.
The only thing is an IPad Pro 2020 that make it match up to a laptop is the Apple magic keyboard. Otherwise, everything else is half-baked.
For a fact, developers are still looking for ways to optimize apps for the new iPadOS 13.4. That is why it has limited functioning such lack of text selection in Google Docs or Microsoft Office.
Some aspects may improve with time, but things browsing experience and hardware design won’t match up to a laptop or a desktop.
